Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI, has announced a significant workforce reduction, laying off approximately 500 employees from its data annotation team. The cuts, communicated late Friday night via internal emails, come as the company shifts its focus toward developing specialist AI tutoring capabilities.

The layoffs appear to be part of an ambitious strategic realignment rather than a cost-cutting measure. Internal messages described the move as a "strategic pivot", with the company choosing to prioritize "specialist AI tutors" over "general AI tutor roles." Despite the layoffs, xAI has unveiled plans to expand its workforce in other areas. Specifically, the company has announced its intent to grow its specialist AI tutor team by a factor of 10. In a post on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, xAI stated: "We are hiring across domains like STEM, finance, medicine, safety, and many more. Come join us to help build truth-seeking AGI."

The company did not directly confirm the layoffs when contacted but pointed to this hiring announcement as evidence of its ongoing growth strategy.

The restructuring comes at a time when xAI is well-funded, having recently secured $10 billion in new investments. This financial backing suggests that the layoffs are not driven by monetary constraints but rather by a reallocation of resources to align with the company’s new priorities.

xAI appears to be betting on the potential for specialist AI tutors to enhance the training and development of its Grok chatbot. The company launched the fourth iteration of Grok in July, branding it as the "smartest AI in the world."
